Did you know that the Pauls Valley percussion students had an original piece of music written for them? This group of students had an original piece written for them by an Oklahoma composer, Chris Prather. Chris is an active composer and percussionist in the OKC area who also works with the High School Drumline during summer training. He has been active with our band camp for the last five years. At the end of band camp this year, percussion instructor Gunnar Long approached Chris about writing an original piece for our group, as they have gotten to know and respect his knowledge of music and teaching. So, by December, he composed an original piece specifically for the percussionists of Pauls Valley High School. No other group has ever performed this music and it will have its debut at the District Solo & Ensemble Contest next Saturday, February 24. He paid a visit this past Thursday morning to offer suggestions on improving the piece and was very impressed with our students. Way to go, Mr. Long and our Pauls Valley Percussion Team!

In an effort to expand students' learning experiences beyond the classroom, an educational field trip was organized for Mr. Long's Junior High Government class. Taking place on November 16th, this outing aimed to offer students a first-hand understanding of the state's political landscape. The trip began with a guided tour of the Capitol, providing insightful lessons on the architectural significance of the State Capitol, showcasing its artistic elements, and providing students with knowledge about the fundamental operations of the state government. During the tour, students had the opportunity to step onto the floor of the State House of Representatives chamber, gaining an up-close view of where legislative debates occur and bills are introduced. Following this, the students were privileged to meet with our State Representative, Cynthina Roe. She generously shared her experiences and responsibilities as a State Representative, shedding light on the bills she has authored, her working hours, and her overall journey in the role. The final segment of the excursion involved a tour of the governor's mansion, conveniently located within walking distance. This portion offered a historical perspective on the mansion itself, accompanied by a meeting with the first lady. Additionally, students were treated to insights from the Governor's personal chef, providing a unique glimpse into the behind-the-scenes workings of the gubernatorial residence. Overall, this educational journey exposed students to the physical spaces where governance occurs and provided invaluable opportunities for them to interact with key figures in the state's political sphere, fostering a deeper understanding of government operations beyond the confines of textbooks and classrooms.
